What my Spanish degree taught me about being - part 3
This definitely shows up when I work with clients! I worked in Pilates studios for over a decade. I mean, technically I still do but as an independent contractor renting space. Anyway, I mean like in a studio where I taught 7 or 8 people in a row day after day alongside other teachers working the same way. So not only did I teach a ton of human beings, I had a front row seat to seeing and hearing many other teachers and clients and observe their dynamics.
I’ve also taken…thousands of lessons and classes in Pilates and other modalities as a student.
And something I’ve seen repeatedly and experienced is correction that feels like criticism. And if you’ve ever been in a romantic relationship or like…had a parent especially during adolescence, you know exactly what I mean. I’ve experienced getting corrections on my form, movement, body, choreography that is teeming with subtext that says “How could you make this mistake you freaking idiot. You’re doing this all wrong and I’ve already talked about this. You’re doing it wrong because YOU’RE wrong.”
I’m not into this. I don’t think it’s nice. I don’t think it’s fair. And I know it’s not accurate.
