Translation | The Puborectalis: A U-shaped muscle that attaches at the pubic symphysis (aka pubic bone which is actually a joint!) and extends the length of the pelvic floor to wrap around the rectum.
This muscle became a celebrity muscle in the widely popular squatty potty commercial. It works to maintain a level of engagement, or shortening, to put a bend in the rectum so poop doesn’t fall out. To allow poop to exit, it releases and lengthens to remove the bend.
